How to plan a slow-travel month without overspending
Staying longer in fewer places can cost less, feel better and show you a side of a city most visitors miss.
The classic holiday is a sprint: eight cities in ten days, two hours in each museum and a new hotel every night. Slow travel turns that around. You pick one or two places and stay for weeks, living a little more like a local. For many travellers, it's cheaper and far more relaxing.
Why longer can cost less
Many short-term rentals offer weekly or monthly discounts, sometimes substantial ones. A kitchen lets you shop at local markets instead of eating every meal out. You spend less on transport because you're not moving every two days. And you stop paying "tourist prices" once you learn where the neighbourhood actually eats.
Choosing where to go
Look for places with:
- A lower cost of living than home, especially for food and transport
- Good public transit or walkability, so you don't need a car
- Off-season timing, when accommodation is cheaper and crowds are thinner
- Easy day trips, so you can explore without packing up
Booking smart
Read reviews carefully, especially comments about noise, internet speed and heating or cooling. Message the host before booking a long stay. Ask about the monthly rate and what's included. Check cancellation terms and confirm the rental follows local short-term rental rules.
Your monthly budget, simply
Plan four buckets:
- Getting there and back
- Accommodation for the full stay
- Daily living, such as groceries, transit and a coffee out, estimated per day and multiplied by the number of days
- Experiences, such as tours, entry fees and special meals
Add a cushion of about 10 percent for surprises.
Practical details people forget
- Travel insurance that covers medical care abroad for the full length of your trip
- Entry rules and visas, including how long you're allowed to stay
- Bank and phone fees, since a no-foreign-transaction-fee card and a local or travel eSIM can save a lot
- Mail, bills and plants at home
Slow travel isn't about seeing less. It's about noticing more.
A month in one place gives you time to find a favourite café, learn a few words of the language and come home rested rather than needing a holiday from your holiday.
