How to find podcasts worth your commute
There are millions of shows and only so many hours in the car. A few habits help you find the good ones faster.
Podcasts have turned commutes, chores and workouts into time for learning and laughing. The problem isn't finding something to listen to. It's finding something worth listening to among millions of options.
Start with what you already love
Think of a book, a subject or a person you find fascinating, and search for that. Many authors, chefs, historians and comedians host or appear on shows. Following a guest you enjoy across several podcasts is a great way to discover new ones.
Try the "three episode" rule
First episodes are often the weakest. Hosts are still finding their rhythm. Give a promising show three episodes before deciding. If it still isn't working, move on without guilt.
Pick episodes, not just shows
You don't have to listen to every episode in order. Scroll through the list and pick the topics that grab you. Most interview and conversation shows work fine out of order.
Mix your formats
- Interview shows for ideas and big names
- Narrative series that tell one story over several episodes, like an audiobook
- Short daily shows for news and quick takes
- Comedy and chat for when you just want company
Speed up, carefully
Most apps let you listen at a faster speed. A little faster can feel natural for slow talkers. Too fast and you stop enjoying it. Find your comfortable setting.
Keep your list short
Subscribe to too many shows and your queue becomes another to-do list. Keep a handful you truly look forward to, and clear out the rest every few months.
Ask friends what they're listening to, too. The best recommendations still come from people who know you.
